“Last Seen: Voices from Slavery’s Past” are live performances in which information wanted advertisements are read aloud and spread by word of mouth. The information wanted ads are those ads that were taken out by the former slaves for the purpose of locating their ancestors. After the Emancipation many black mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, husband and wives placed ads in newspapers to search for their ancestors and the “Last Seen: Voices from Slavery’s Past” brings out the poignancy of their efforts. The purpose of this performance is to bring history and emotion to stage. The broader purpose is to ensure that for many blacks who had suffered slavery their family trees do not end up with slavery. I got very emotional with the performance and I liked every bit of it. The performance shook me and made me feel pitiful, pathetic and plaintive. It made me think about the emotional suffering that people endured even after slavery ended. The emotional suffering was heart aching and it made me think the ills that slavery had perpetrated at large.
