The data center is installed in the basement of its two-story headquarters building. The data center is equipped with halon-gas fire suppression equipment and an uninterruptible power supply system.

Because the programming staff is small and the work demands have increased backups are only made whenever time presents. The backup files are stored in a locked cabinet in the data center. Recently, due to several days of heavy rains, Zebra’s building recently experienced serious flooding that destroyed not only the computer hardware but also all the data and program files that were on-site.

Zebra’s CEO has asked that you review the weak areas of their system and what controls would you put into place to keep this situation from happening in the future.

Weak areas:

• Database is located at underground which makes it vulnearable to events like loss of data from events like building collapse, flood
• Backups are not taken regularly
• Backup files are kept at same place where the main database is present.

Measures:

• Database should be located at higher level, preferrable 2nd floor and out of reach of everyone but only selected personalls
• Database backup policy should be framed and strictly adhered
• Backup should be kept in cloud system as well as place other than data cent or the main business building.
