Adulthood begins at the age of 20. It can be defined as the period in human life when he or she achieve complete physical as well as intellectual maturity. The age of 20-40 can be termed as early adulthood. At this age, the physical development of a person is complete other than height and weight which might differ with time. Some of the major characteristics of adulthood are maturity, decision-making ability, multi-tasking, purpose in life, etc.

Cognition changes in a person keep appearing for one's entire life. However, it peaks around the age of 35 and gradually slows down in later adulthood. The skill to control one's emotion increases during adulthood especially in older adults. As the age of a person keeps on increasing, the changes in emotions also become complex.

The influence of heredity and environment is very strong in adulthood. For example, in adults, the texture and quality of hair are influenced by genetic factors. An example of the environment influencing adulthood is when a person comes under peer pressure and gets into drugs.
