Has the U.S.achieved its goal of a trade war with China. Why? ( better over 100 words)
For Trump to declare victory by the goals he set for himself, he needs China to open its market further to American exports , especially the agricultural commodities hit hard during the trade war. He is also pushing to stop China from forcing US firms to hand over valuable technology, but such movements would require drastic changes on Beijing's part. For its part, Xi needs Trump mainly to eliminate or sharply reduce tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese goods worth US$ 250 billion
Such developments will help restore badly broken trust in the trade relationship between the US and China at a time when China's economic fundamentals are weakening. The United States also needs to include clauses in the agreement to ensure China meets its commitments. Depending on how far China is able to go, this may be a negotiating point this paves the way for the US to back off some of its tougher demands.
Trump is in the grip of a long government shutdown triggered by his demand for funding from the border wall, which has reduced his approval ratings and risks causing long-term damage to the US government and its economy.
A simple win could involve China's commitments to buy specified
amounts of US goods by certain target dates. On the side of China,
anything that lifts some or all of the tariffs on its US exports
would be a victory.
For the United States, there is benefit in keeping as long as
possible to maximize leverage at the threat of increased
tariffs.
