How does the nervous system code information about stimulus intensity?

Describe the general mechanism of lateral inhibition and explain its importance in sensory processing.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The nervous system is the complex part of the human body which co-ordinate the information by the transmission of signals toward a different part of the body. The nervous system is responsible to detect the environmental changes which have a different impact on the body. They worked randomly with the endocrine system so as to respond to such events. This is a highly complex part of the animal which coordinates and sensory information by the transmission of signals toward a different part of the body. The nervous system is a complex collection of the nerves and specialized cells which is known as neurons.
The Nervous System code information about stimulus intensity in different ways. Frequency coding is the first way in which the rate of firing of sensory neurons enhances with the increased intensity. The second way is population coding in which different numbers of primary parents are responsible to increase the stimuli. They also possess and ability to localized stimulus. The nervous system also conveys the intensity by the rate of neurons at a specific time.
The general mechanism of the lateral innovation that explains the importance of sensory processing is the spread of action. Lateral inhibition generally disables the action potential from the excited neuron toward the neighboring neurons. The little innovation generally involved the suppression of neurons by different kind of neuron which innovate the activity of neurons by sharing the sense of perception.
