The company was founded in 1993. it is one of the largest domestic steel producer and metal recyclers based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It has over 7,700 employees and manufacturing facilities located throughout US that includes 8 steel processing facilities, 6 steel mills, 2 iron production facilties and 6 steel fabrication plants.

2016 Acquisition:

The company has acquired Vulcan Threaded products, Inc. on August 1, 2016. The acquisition price was $114 millionon a debt free, cash free basis. Vulcan is based in Alabama, is the largest supplier of threaded rod products , and produces cold drawn and heat treasted bar. There are appoximately 225 people working and it shipped around 89,000 tons during last year. The acquisition presented a step forward to the growt objective of pursuing higher margin downstrean business opportunities that utilizes the product of SDI in their manufacturing process. The purpose is to: reduce volatility during strong and weak market cycles.
