If 2.0 mol of calcium carbonate is strongly heated in a tube furnace, what is the identity and what is the volume of gas produced if it is collected at STP?

A) O2, 22.4 L

B) O, 66.6 L

C) CO and O2, 44.4 L

D) CO2, 44.4 L

Solutions

Expert Solution

Correct answer is option (D) CO2, 44.4 L

Explanation :-

When Calcium carbonate is strongly heated in a tube furnace, there undergoes decomposition reaction to produce calcium oxide and carbon dioxide () as,

1 mol produces 1 mol . Therefore 2 mol calcium carbonate ( ) decompose to produce 2 mol Carbon dioxide ( ).

Therefore no of moles of gas ( ) produced = 2 moles

According to Ideal gas equation ,

Where P - pressure of the gas,  V - volume of the gas, n - no of moles, T - temperature, R - gas constant = 0.08206 atm.L/mol.K

Therefore,

It is given that gas is collected at STP condition. At standard temperature and pressure,

Pressure - P = 1 atm

Temperature - T = 273.15 K

That is volume of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is appropriately equal to,  V = 44.4 L

Therefore option (D) is correct
