Multiple Part question:

A) List the three forces determining the rate of glomerular filtration (write out their full names)

B) under each one, note the materials that are moving through the membrane (be specific)

C) under each one, note which from which compartment to which compartment these materials are moving

Solutions

Expert Solution

A .Three forces determining glomerular filtration rate(GFR) are:

1.glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure (directly proportional to GFR)

2. Glomerular colloid oncotic pressure (inversely related to gfr)

3. Bowman's capsular hydrostatic pressure.(inversely related to gfr)

B. Material moving through the membrane are:
1.Glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure: the composition of fluid filtered due to this pressure is same as plasma except proteins.

(It filters water with its dissolved substances except particles with size either more than 8nm or negatively charged).

2. Glomerular colloid oncotic pressure: it prevent movement of water from glomerulus to bowman's capsule.

3. Bowman's capsular hydrostatic pressure: it pushes the water with its soluble substances into glomerulus and also opposes the filtration due to glomerular hydrostatic pressure.

C. Direction of movement of material.
1. Glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure: material moves from glomerulus to bowman's space.
2. Bowman's capsular hydrostatic pressure : material moves from bowman's space to glomerular capillary.
3. Glomerular colloid oncotic pressure: from bowman's space to glomerulus.
