A gardener thinks that his plants are being affected by how closely together he places the plants in his garden. Specifically, he thinks that the height that his plants achieve by the end of the growing season differs according to how much space he allocates between each plant. Consequently, he wishes to evaluate whether there is a difference in plant heights (in centimetres) for rose plants that are planted either 6 inches apart, or 12 inches apart. He has a large garden, so has subsequently planted ten (10) rose plants 6 inches apart, and another ten (10) rose plants 12 inches apart.

  1. Identify (i.e. name) which of the inference procedures covered (hypothesis test or confidence interval) s most appropriate to analyse this researcher’s data?

b. Each inference procedure has a set of model conditions that must be evaluated prior to using the procedure. For the inference procedure you have identified in part a, list each required condition using the context of the research scenario described above (that is, the variables/language of this specific scenario).

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a)

Hypothesis test is most appropriate to analyse this researcher’s data because the Research Question is: Is there a difference in plant heights (incentimeters) for rose plants that are planted either 6 inches apart or 12 inches apart.

So, we have:

H0: Null Hypothesis: (There is no difference in plant heights (incentimeters) for rose plants that are planted either 6 inches apart or 12 inches apart)

HA: Alternative Hypothesis: (There is a difference in plant heights (incentimeters) for rose plants that are planted either 6 inches apart or 12 inches apart) (Claim)

(b)

Conditions for the above 2 sample t test are as follows:

(i) Sampling methodfor each sample is Simple Random Sampling

(ii) The samples are independent

(iii) Each population is at least 20 times larger than its respective sample

(iv) The population distribution is normal.

(a) Haris spends all of his income on apples and oranges. He thinks that apples and oranges are perfect substitutes; one apple is just as good as one orange. Apples cost $4 a unit and oranges cost $5 a unit. His income is given by $120 per month. If the price of apples increases to $6 a unit, calculate the (i) Slutsky substitution (ii) Income and (iii) the total effect of a price decrease on the consumption of apples. (b)...
