(Answer) Prior to the 1800's, European explorers and officials set up colonies in certain areas of the world. The lifeblood of these colonies was always 'trade'. Cotton, indigo, spices and tea were among the top commodities to be traded around the world.
If a trade has to be profitable, the transport and industry involved in the process would need to be efficient and affordable. With the popularity of the railway, the steam engine and the rise of factories in the industrial age, colonies yielded a vast profit and were able to establish themselves as a formidable power in the new world.
Nations in Asia and the continent of Africa were those that thrived because of the industrial revolution. This revolution began with the invention of the printing press, the steam engine, the mining industry and even the automobile. Trade routes were well connected and better communication was established through the wire and the postal system.
