One of the emerging trends in English Language Learning is Content Integrated Language Learning. Earlier English was taught as a separate subject (not even a language) where all the prose, poetry, drama etc. used to form the content of the text book. Today, the trend has changed that LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) opportunity is made available with all the subjects. Almost all the teachers use videos and different reading materials for their content which in turn help the ELLs have additional listening and reading time to strengthen their language. Classrooms have also changed drastically as there is more interaction in the classrooms which gives opportunity for the students to express themselves freely. Writing was always there in the curriculum.
Another challenge is managing the mixed classroom where students from different proficiency level will be present. The content should be challenging enough for the high proficient students but at the same time manageable for the low proficiency students. For certain known topics, the teachers can use the high proficiency students to motivate and teach the low proficiency students. The teacher can arrange for few special sessions to bridge the gap.
