Calculate the pH of a solution that is 1.5 x 10^-8 M NaOH. This is a very dilute solution

Solutions

Expert Solution

NaOH is strog base .For bases [OH^-] ion conc between 10^-1 to 10^-7 M

1.5*10^-8 M NaOH is very diluted solution.

Total conc of OH^- = conc of OH^- from NaOH + conc of OH^- from H2O

                                   = 1.5*10^-8 + 10^-7

                                    = 0.15*10^-7 + 10^-7

                                      = (0.15+ 1) *10^-7

                                      = 1.15*10^-7 M

POH    = -log[OH^-]

               = -log1.15*10^-7

                = 6.9393

PH      = 14-POH

               = 14-6.9393   = 7.0607
