Q7 : A cascade refrigeration system is designed to supply 10 tonnes of refrigeration at an evaporator temperature of -40°C and a condenser temperature of 36°C. The load at -40°C is absorbed by a unit using R-22 as the refrigerant and is rejected to a cascade condenser at -10°C. The cascade condenser is cooled by a unit using R-12 as the refrigerant and operating between - 20°C evaporating temperature and 36°C condenser temperature. The refrigerant leaving the R-22 condenser is subcooled by 6°C but there is no subcooling of R-12 refrigerant. The gas leaving both the evaporators is dry and saturated and the compressions are isentropic. Neglecting losses. calculate the COP of whole system

A cooling plant adopted a two-stage cascade refrigeration system to meet the required cooling load. In both upper and lower cycles, the refrigerant leaves condenser as saturated liquid and enters compressor as saturated vapor. The isentropic efficiency of the upper cycle compressor is 80 %, while the lower cycle compressor is 70% efficient. The pressure limits of the upper and lower cycles are 1 MPa and 0.2 MPa with refrigerant-134a, respectively. Heat rejection from the lower cycle to the upper...

Consider a two-stage cascade refrigeration system operating between the pressure limits of 1.2 MPa and 200 kPa with refrigerant R717 (Ammonia) a as the working fluid. The refrigerant leaves the condenser as a saturated liquid and is throttled to a flash chamber operating at 0.45 MPa. Part of the refrigerant evaporates during this flashing process, and this vapor is mixed with the refrigerant leaving the low-pressure compressor. The mixture is then compressed to the condenser pressure by the high-pressure compressor....

A company owns a refrigeration system whose refrigeration capacity is 200 tons (1 ton of refrigeration = 211 kJ/min), and you are to design a forced-air cooling system for fruits whose diameters do not exceed 7 cm under the following conditions: The fruits are to be cooled from 28°C to an average temperature of 8°C. The air temperature is to remain above -2°C and below 10°C at all times, and the velocity of air approaching the fruits must remain under...

You are considering a project that will supply an automobile production facility with 35,000 tonnes of machine screws annually for five years. To get the project started, you will need an initial investment of $1,500,000 in threading equipment. The project will last for five years. The accounting department estimates that annual fixed costs will be $300,000 and that variable costs should be $200 per tonne. The CCA rate for threading equipment is 20%. Accounting estimates a salvage value of $500,000...
