Early in this chapter we described a study by Bartholow and Anderson (2002) examining how the experience of violence in video games influenced aggressive behavior for males and females. Their results suggest that increased violence increases aggressive behavior for males but has little or no effect for females. The following data are measures of aggressive behavior similar to the results obtained in the study.

Factor A: Gender

Factor B: Type of Game

  Nonviolent violent
  3 9
  6 4
Female 2 5
  2 8
  4 4
  7 6
  9 12
  9 16
Male 4 13
  8 17
  10 13
  8 13

Use a two-factor ANOVA with α = .05 to evaluate the significance of the main effects and the interaction.

Compute M, T, and SS for each of the four conditions.

Factor A:Gender

Factor B: Type of Game

  Nonviolent violent
Female M = M =
  T = T =
  SS = SS =
Male M = M =
  T = T =
  SS = SS =
  ∑X² =

Fill in the missing values of the following ANOVA table. Note: Do not round the MS values, but round the F statistics to two decimal places.

Is there a main effect for factor B?

Is there an interaction?

Describe the effect of the violent game compared with a nonviolent game on the aggressive behavior for males and for females.

Overall, aggressive behavior in male subjects is      in female subjects, and aggressive behavior after a violent game is      after a nonviolent game. The violence of the game has      on the female participants, and      on the males.
