Lesson Objectives :By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Be able to discuss the history of labor unions. Explain some of the reasons for a decline in union membership over the past sixty years. Be able to explain the process of unionization and laws that relate to unionization. Be able to describe the process of collective bargaining. Understand the types of bargaining issues and the rights of management. Discuss some strategies when working with unions. Be able to explain how to manage the grievance process. Be able to discuss employee's rights and responsibilities. You are to complete two annotated bibliographies for each week’s assignment (week’s 1, 4, & 8). Your AB’s should be ½ to ¾ pages long. It should be double-spaced, and you are to use Times new Roman 12 font. For your AB, you must have: • Your name, date, course, and AB number at the top (see example) • APA Reference before the information (see example) Annotated bibliographies must be written in manner, in which, they are understandable. You must describe all-important data such as: • The participants • The reason the study was conducted • What research design was used (surveys, interviews, case study, etc.) • Which research analysis was used (MANOVA, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallace, etc.) • The results of the study along with any conclusions of the author(s) Your study must include all of these (if applicable). Your AB MAY NOT be copied and pasted directly from the source. There MUST NOT be any form of plagiarism in your annotated bibliography (or any other assignment).
Labour Unions - It is an organised association of workers , oftenly formed in a trade or proffession in order to protect the rights and interests of the workers. ( of theie own ).
History of labour unions - Labour union started and belongs to 18th century and the industrial evolution of EUROPE. Union membership and power peaked in around 1970. At that time union membership in private sector began to decline and continues today.
Reason for decline in union membership -
1. It often seem irrelevant. In good times , workers dont need unions to increase wages and protect their intrest , in bad times , they aren’t able to protect members layoff , wage etc. Unions cost a high price to firms contributing demise to many firms
2. Unions have a poor public image , employers often use this aura as greed and corruption to blunt union organising campaigns
3. Most workers now turn to goverment for their basic protection not unions. Workers depend on government for pensions , healthcare, and basic amenities.
UNIONIZATION PROCESS - It is a process of organising the employees of a company as a lobour union which will act as a intermediatry between employees and the company management. In most cases it requires majority vote to form a union.
Collective bargain - It is a agreement negotiated between a lobour union and employerthat sets the fourth terms of employment for the employees who are member of the trade unions. It may include provisions for wages , vacation , working time , etc.
TYPES OF BARGAIN ISSUES -
Wage issues - this includes how basic wage are set , wage differences, etc
Institutional Issues - these consists rights and duties of emloyer employees and unions , includes union security checks , etc
Admistrative issues - this include issues such as seniority, health and safety of employees, technical chage , work issues , etc.
STRATIGIES WHEN WORKING WITH UNIONS -
1 Supply Restrictions - First strategy to work with union is to restrict the supply of labour and win the argument
2 Collective Bargain - Employees could collectively bargain and make the argument in their favour
3. Increase in demand - employees could increase their effectiveness by imposing greater discipline on others by which their productivity will rise.
How to manage GRIVIENCE PROCESS -
1. Intiate the grivience
2. Investigate the grivience
3. Hold a grivience hearing
4. Make decisions and inform employees
5. Take further action.

Responsibilities-
1 Work safely to ensure safety of his own and others
2 make sure your action dont cause harm or injury to others.
3. Be trustworthy towards the firm and the employer.
4. Make sure no cheating or unresponsive action is taken towards firm or employer.( To be loyal )
RIGHTS -
1. Get proper and safe working conditions
2. Get proper wages and remuneration
3. Work is done in proper working hours
4. Basic amenities are provided by the firm.
