When an employee’s performance does not meet expected standards, that means the employee underperformed. Underperformation is the poor performance or the failure to perform duties to the standards required by the company.

Following are many reasons why employees underperformed

1) Many employees do not know what's expected from them in work : - One of the basic reason why employees do not perform well is because they do not know what is work standards they should maintain. Without clear guidance, employees will never know about the standards they have to maintain.

2) Employees do not know what's in it for them : - Some employees wants to know why they have given a particular task and what will it accomplish. Employees want their own growth too, and would like to perform to the optimum level.

3) Employees are hesitant to share their problems : - The management do not try to understand their employees problem in a different way, the employees may have different problem and wants the management to understand it in different ways.

4) Employees lack the skill needed for the job : - When an employee does not know how to do the work, the most simple solution will be to train them. But if the human resources or management does not train their employee, the employee will continue to do work without knowledge.

5) Employees not willing to work : - The employees may not be willing to do work that are given to them. One of the reason Could be work environment change or the work assigned to them is not of their interests or they have weakness in that project or work.

6) The work environment does not support team effort : - When management do not encourage employees for the individual work load, they don't encourage team work either. When this happens, any team effort will arise to conflict.
