Subject Anatomy: Discuss the blood supply of the gastrointestinal tract?
Blood supply of GIT -
1. Coeliac trunk - It is the artery of foregut.It supplies the a. Lower end of esophgus.
b. Stomach.
c. Upper part of the duodenum.
Coeliac trunk gives left gastric artery which gives two or three esophageal branches at cardiac end of stomach.
Left gastric artery- It also supplies lesser curvature of stomach.
2. Superior mesentric artery - It is the artery of midgut.
This artery supplies- a. Lower part of duodenum.
b. Jejunum.
c. Ileum.
d. Caecum.
e. Ascending colon and 2/3rd of transverse colon.
3. Inferior mesentric artery- It is the artery of hind gut. It supplies -
a. The left 1/3rd of transverse colon.
b. The descending colon.
c. Sigmoid colon.
Venous drainage -
1. Superior mesentric vein - This veins drains blood from small intestine, appendix , caecum and ascending colon.
2. Inferior mesentric vein - It drains blood from rectum, anal canal , the sigmoid colon and descending colon.
