The body always tends to maintain a state of equilibrium called
“Homeostasis”- in many of its internal physiological processes. This
balance is very essential for the normal life.
Homeostasis helps to maintain internal physiological processes
at optimal levels. The nutritional level, fluid level, temperature
level, etc., are maintained at certain optimal level or homeostasis
levels. When there is some variation in these levels the individual
is motivated for restoring the state of equilibrium.
If the imbalance in the body is caused by tissue need i.e.
body's need for food or drink, the hungry person needs to do
something to obtain food or water. We develop hunger motive in
order to maintain homeostasis. This is indicated by contraction of
stomach muscles causing some pain or discomfort called hunger
pangs. When the water level in the body decreases we develop motive
to drink water.Usually thirst motive is indicated by dryness of
mouth.
This is where the concept of homeostatic drive becomes
important.Tissue need leads to internal imbalance, which leads to
homeostatic drive, which leads to appropriate behaviour, which
leads to restoration of internal balance, which leads to drive
reduction. The internal environment requires a regular supply of
raw materials from the external world.
How
does the nervous system restore homeostasis after a homeostatic
imbalance ?
How does the endeocdine system restore homeostasis after a
homeostatic imbalance?
How does the immune system restore homeostasis after a
homeostatic imbalance?
these 3 organ systems are required to work together to address
one (not 3) homeostatic condition of your choice.
Consider the differences in homeostasis in the body for vitamins
and minerals. How does the body control or regulate the amount of
water soluble vitamins, like vitamin C, vs. a mineral such as iron.
Give examples of factors that influence this. You can use iron or
calcium as your mineral.
How does the principle of homeostasis relate to endocrine
function? Provide a specific example of how hormones are regulated
through the use of feedback systems.
Homeostasis of the spinal cord : Discuss how the organ responds
to maintain homeostasis in the body. Prediction: Predict the types
of problems that would occur in this organ if it could not maintain
homeostasis.
