A researcher has proposed a study of a population with Hepatitis C, a blood/liver disease that is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids (sexual contact, sharing needles, etc.). Since she does not have access to medical records because of confidentiality, how will she “find” this population, i.e. what type of sampling techniques might she use? What is this kind of population called? Give two other examples of this type of population.
ANSWER::
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is mostly transmitted through exposure to infective blood. This may happen through transfusions of HCV-contaminated blood and blood products, contaminated injections during medical procedures, and through injection drug use. Sexual transmission is also possible, but is much less common. There is no vaccine for HCV .
Early identification of persons with chronic HBV or HCV infection enables them to receive the necessary care and treatment to prevent or delay progression of liver disease. Testing also provides an opportunity to link people to interventions to reduce transmission, through counselling on risk behaviours and provision of prevention commodities (such as sterile needles and syringes) and hepatitis B vaccination.
Diagnostic tests for HCV infection include serological assays for antibodies and molecular techniques for detecting virus particles. Positive antibody test results usually require confirmation of HCV RNA using a molecular amplification assay to provide an assessment of active viral replication. Quantification of HCV RNA provides important prognostic information on the likelihood of response to antiviral therapy.
Several quantitative and qualitative assays are available with dynamic ranges between 101 and 107 IU/mL. Routine liver function tests have limited diagnostic value as more than 50% of patients infected with HCV will have normal transaminase levels .
this is called as a specific population those consist or carry Hepatitis C problem and transmitted from unnatural touching or used toold or by surgical tools.these disese basically transmitted in lower or in poor family or person .those who dosent know how to maintain their life style and how to follow the cleaniness process .
