Solutions

Expert Solution

i) Box of cereal sold in a grocery store:

The demand for cereal sold in a grocery store is price inelastic. There has to be a severe increase in price of cereal for its demand to fall. But, in the case where there are a lot of substitutes available to the given cereal, in that case, the demand for the given cereal will be price elastic as the consumer can shift his consumption to another cereal if the price of the given cereal rises.

ii) Gasoline

Demand for gasoline is price inelastic because of the nature of its usage. Necessity goods like medicines, food items, gas, electricity, have a price inelastic demand because a consumer cannot reduce the consumption of these commodities in response to price changes.

iii) Hotel rooms for people planning a vacation

Demand for this good will be price elastic. If the prices of hotel rooms go up, people would simply postpone their vacation or change the destination.

iv) Hotel rooms for people on business to meet an important client

Due to the urgent and important usage of the given commodity (hotel room), the demand for this commodity will be price inelastic as even after an increase in price, people on business cannot postpone a meeting given that the client is an important one.
