What is the greater omentum? where is it and what does it do?please explain human anatomy in detail?
Greater omentum: This is a apron like structure that covers the peritonum of the human body. This structure is hang from the greater curvature of the stomach, so this fold of covering is called greater omentum.
Location: This fold of peritoneum is hanged from the greater curvature of the stomach and connects to the transverse colon of the human body.
Functions: i) The main function of this apron like fold is to cover the peritoneal cavity and it has adipose tissue which helps in the fat deposition in the peritonum.
ii) This covering also protect the peritonum from the spreading of some infections. This greater omentum can isolate the infection of the peritoneum.
Anatomy of greater omentum: This greater omentum is actually extended from the greater curvature of the stomach. There is another omentum present in the human body named lesser omentum. The lesser omentum is present in the lesser curvature of the stomach. So according to the location of the omentum it's so named. The lesser omentum is situated in between liver and lesser curvature of the stomach. But the Greater omentum is originated from the greater curvature of stomach and it become folded like apron and covers the whole peritoneum and transverse colon , intestine. This greater omentum is very thin link structure and have perforation in its anatomy. This folded structure has its blood supply from the gastroepiploic arteries for the proper manitainance of the structure and covering of the peritoneum.
