Albert Camus's "The Guest" was published in 1957.
The prime themes in "The guest" are existentialism indicating the perennial availability of choices in the human life. Another significant theme is accountability. The choices in the context of Daru and Balducci reflect facet of accountability. Further the possibility of existence of honour in the abusurd world is explored by Camus. Freedom and colonial conflict are also the vital aspects.
Summary- Daru is an Algerian school teacher who sees two men coming down the hill. These two are- Balducci and a prisoner.
When they reach school, Balducci hands over the Arab person/ a prisoner and conveys Daru to hand him over to police as he had killed his cousin.
But Daru denies to act the way instructed by Balducci. But he influences Daru by taking it formally with a paper. Daru feeds the Arab and provides two choices- either to travel the path of freedom or go to police station.
The Arab decides to go to police. After returning home, Daru comes to know that the Arabs will kill him.
