1. A loam-textured soil has from 50 to 100 square meters of surface area per gram of soil. Assume you had 100 grams of a loam-textured soil, and its S.A. was 75 m2/g. If this S.A. could be projected on one flat surface, How many football fields of area would this equal? ( Note: A football field is 120 yards long and 160 feet in width) Show your calculations.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The surface area per gram of soil is -------------- 50-100 m2

100g of loam soil has surface area --------------- 75m2/g

Hence the surface area of 100g of soil sample= 75m2/g x 100g = 7500 m2

Area of football field     = 120 yards x 160 feet

                                     = 120(0.914 metres) x 160 (0.305 metres)

                                     = 5352.384 m2

Hence the area of football field = 5352.384 m2

Now we have to find 7500 m2 is equal to how many football fields?

the area of one football field = 5352.384 m2

? football fields                      = 7500 m2

= 7500m2 / 5352.384 m2

= 1.4 football fields
