(4Z)-2,4-diethyl-1,4-hexadiene: I need to draw the structure, but I don't understand what "4" Z means (I know what is Z however). It is Z in relation to what?
Thanks!
E-Z configuration, is the IUPAC method of describing the geometrical isomers, the absolute stereochemistry of double bonds in organic chemistry.
It can be used to describe double bonds having two, three or four substituents.
If the two groups of higher priority are on opposite sides of the double bond, the bond is assigned the E configuration E (E = entgegen, German: German word for "opposite").
If the two groups of higher priority are on the same side of the double bond, the bond is assigned the Z configuration ( zusammen, German: the German word for "together").
