  1. You have designed a new drug (Provasoshut®) that acts as an agonist of alpha-adrenergic receptors. In most of the systems you have studied (e.g. capillary beds of the digestive system, liver, and adipose), Provasoshut® causes vasoconstriction that lasts for at least 15 minutes. However, when you tried the drug on the capillary beds of the contracting muscle of the frog leg prep in your physiology lab, the vasoconstriction lasted only 20 seconds! What is the best explanation for the short-lived action of Provasoshut® in this preparation?

Expert Solution

ANSWER-

New Drug Provsoshut is alpha adrenergic agonist .

Explaination .

It's action --- On blood vessels there are two type of receptors .Alpha 1 receptor and Beta 2 receptor .Stimulation of Alpha 1 receptor will cause vasoconstriction and stimulation of beta 2 cause vasoldilation .Effect on sympathetic system depends on the predominant type of receptor present in particular vascular bed .Skin ,mucosal and splanchnic blood vessels are constricted due to predominance of Alpha receptor whereas skeletal muscular blood are dilated due to presence of Beta 2 receptors in excess as compared to Alpha 1 receptor .So sympathetic system stimulation of skeletal muscles cause less vasoconstriction in vascular beds .

So in most of organs like digestive system ,adipose tissue and liver alpha 1 receptor predominane present so vasoconstriction lasted for 20 min .Frog leg musculature have predominance of Beta 2 receptors which action is cause vasodilation but as no beta 2 agonist is used separately so Alpha agonist will have action on receptors present for it but for short lived as it is very less in number in muscles of frog .
