1. Define schizogony and relate this method of reproduction to the cyclic appearance of chills and fever in a patient infected with the schizogonic protozoan Plasmodium. (More space on reverse.)
2. How does a virus replicate? Include the mechanism of infection (generally).
1.Schizogony is the process of asexual reproduction especially in the protozoans which involves multiple fission.eg. plasmodium
The cyclic appearance of chills and fever occur in malarial patient caused by the plasmodium. It is generally related with the periodic rupture of mature schizonts . Whenever the schizogony occured in the blood cells , the mature schizonts are released causing the fever and chills. In the case of plasmodium , it takes place generally every 48 hrs.
2. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites means they can only replicate inside the host cell. Viruses replicate themselves by infecting the host cell. Viral replication takes place in the six steps as follows:
1. Attachment or adsorption of viral capsid protein on the host surface.
2. Penetration - entering the host cell through endocytosis.
3. Uncoating is removal of viral capsid
4.replication or multiplication of the viral genome by occupying the host cell processes.
5. Assembly - proteins surround the viral nucleic acid to form the capsid.
6. Lysis is the breaking of host cell and releasing the newly formed viruses.
