If an asteroid fragment contains carbon, it may burn when entering Earth's atmosphere. What is the most likely compound to result from this process? Which type of chemical bond would result from this process? Of the types chemical reactions studied in this course, which type would this be? Be sure to fully explain all of your answers.
Part A)
When asteroid parts containing Carbon enter in to the earth's atmosphere, due to the presence of oxygen gas in the earth's atmosphere Carabon atoms react with oxygens atoms Carbon monoxide is formed first then Carbon dioxide is formed. The chemical reaction can be written as follows.
2 CO (g) + O2 (g) ? 2 CO2 (g)
Part B)
Carbon atom is a tetravallent atom so it has 4 vallence electrons. Each Carbon atom has oxidation state of 4+ Where as each Oxygen has oxidation state of 2- . So each Carbon atom forms a double bond with two oxygen atoms. Hence the chemical bonding between C and O atoms is covallent bond.
O = C = O
Part C)
The formation of CO2 is due to combustion of Carbon in excess oxygen. Hence the reaction is Combustion.
