What is the minimum mass of 25 C water required to melt 40.9 g of ice?

What is the minimum mass of 25 C water required to melt 40.9 g of ice?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The heat required for change of mass (m) is given by

m- mass of substance, C- specific heat capacity, - temperature difference

Specific heat capacity is the heat required for 1Kg of a substance to increase its temperature by 1oC.

The heat required for total change ie, for phase change of ice to water and change of temperature of water from 0 to 25oC is given by the following,

For a phase change we consider latent heat for that specific phase change.

Here the ice changes to water ie, solid to liquid phase change is occuring and we take latent heat of fusion of ice.

m = 40.9 * 10-3 Kg, latent heat = 334KJ/Kg,

The heat required is

The heat required for water to change its temperature from 0 to 25oC

Specific heat capacity of water = 4.18 J/gK

Temperature is taken in Kelvin. 0oC = 273K

Total heat =
