The "Monkey Wrench Gang," a 1975 book written by Edward Abbey inspired the development of what group?
The "Nigerian 419" scheme is primarily what type of computer crime?
Monkeywrenching, non-violent disobedience and environmental protestors' sabotage against those they deem to be ecological exploiters. The term came into use after the publication of the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975) by author Edward Abbey, which described the actions in Utah and Arizona of a group of "environmental warriors." The term was used periodically from the beginning of the 21st century to indicate other forms of global anti-capitalist advocacy. Ecotage (a portmanteau of the prefix eco- and the word sabotage) is an analogous concept. Monkeywrenching is separate from ecoterrorism-called practises, which is often a misnomer and is properly applied to rogue examples or persons. Monkeywrenching, on the other side, is normally guided by a reverence for life protection and is generally confined to two forms: either nonviolent disobedience or sabotage that may not explicitly endanger anyone.
Familiar scenarios in civil disobedience involve vessel protestors who position themselves between harpoons and whales or who tie themselves to earthmoving devices, thereby putting themselves at risk of harm if the operation they have disrupted should proceed. A prominent example of monkeywrenching is that of Julia Butterfly Hill, who for 738 straight days, starting in December 1997, sat on a treetop in northern California and successfully protected the tree, a 1,000-year-old redwood, against logging by the Pacific Timber Company. Working in solidarity with the Earth First! opposition organisation. Hill Tree sat until a long-term preservation arrangement was reached between the parties.
