Sampling refers to the statistical process of selecting and studying the characteristics of a relatively small number of items from a relatively large population of such items. The small selection is called sample.
It is generally more expensive and time consuming process to collect data from the whole population of a market. Marketers therefore make extensive of sampling from which, through careful design and analysis, marketers can draw information about their chosen market.
Random Sampling would be best. where a sample of items is chosen randomly from a population, and each item has an equal probability of being chosen.
Stratified sampling can be used where a researcher’s target population of interest is significantly heterogeneous,a researcher wants to observe the relationship(s) between two or more subgroups; and his goal is to create representative samples from even the smallest, most inaccessible subgroups of the population he or she is interested in.
Quota sampling is a non-probabilistic sampling method where we divide the survey population into mutually exclusive subgroups. These subgroups are selected with respect to certain known and thus non-random features, traits, or interests. Consider the situation where an interviewer has to survey people about a Anti-acne Cream. His population is people in a certain city between 14 and 24 years old. The interviewer might decide they want two survey subgroups — one male, and the other female — each with 100 people.
