Mary, the director of nursing at a regional blood bank, is concerned about the declining number of blood donors. It’s May, and Mary knows that the approaching summer will mean increased demands for blood and decreased supplies, especially of rare blood types. She is excited, therefore, when a large corporation offers to host a series of blood drives at all of its locations, beginning at corporate headquarters. Soon after Mary and her staff arrive at the corporate site, Mary hears a disturbance. Apparently, a nurse named Peggy was drawing blood from a male donor with a very rare blood type when the donor fondled her breast. Peggy jumped back and began to cry. Joe, a male colleague, sprang to Peggy’s defense and told the donor to leave the premises. To Mary’s horror, the male donor was a senior manager with the corporation.
- What is the ethical dilemma in this case?
- What values are in conflict?
- How should Mary deal with Peggy, Joe, the donor, and representatives of the corporation?
1)
The ethical dilemma faced by mary in this case will be;
.Mary had a dilema to either stand for Peggy's right or remain quiet due to fear of confronting the senior manager.
.if mary will remain quiet after knowing everything then this will be against her ethics and moral values and this will add to her guilt.
.If mary will speak for peggy and will favor her then her relations with the senior manager will spoil and this will be bad for her business.
2)Values in conflict;
.The right of Peggy's as an employee to stand against the wrong doings and humiliation.
. Keeping the rights of the patients to get the blood who will require it in the future.
3)
How mary should deal with peggy;
Marry should try to calm down peggy in the first place and tell her to relax and do not cry.
.Mary should listen to the entire incident calmly from her without forcing her on anything.
.Mary should take peggy aside and then ask her what exactly happened.
Mary should not force peggy to remain silent as the donor is the senior manager but should ask her to speak outher mind.
How mary should deal with Joe;
.Mary should praise joefor taking quick actions in favor of peggy.
Mary should also cross verify the entire incident with Joe for futher clarification.
How mary should deal with donar;
Mary should ask the donor that whatever peggy is saying ,does he agree upon it or not.
.Mary should try to handle the situation without yelling at donor and make sure he is not insulted.
.Mary should take the donor aside and then question him about his wrong doings,and not distrub the entire camp.
. Before making any judgements Mary should give the donor one chance to say something in his favour.
How mary should deal with representatives of the corporation;
.Mary should try to claim down the representatives and avoid any kind of outrage in the camp.
.The representatives should be requested to continue with the blood donation drive and not stop the cause.
.Mary should assure the representatives that everything is under control and right and fair decision will be taken on the issue.
