Ethics: The Internet of Things refers to the increased proliferation of devices that are connected to the Internet and that in turn can be connected to each other. Although there are a number of benefits to this level of connectivity for both society and businesses, there are also a number of risks and ethical issues. What are some of the risks and ethical is- sues that stem from this? Do the benefits outweigh the downsides? What physical objects would you consider not allowing to be connected through the Internet, and why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The first ethical issue is the breach of privacy or personal space that can be accessed by the devices connected to the internet. The second ethical issue is the disclosure of the personal data that can be related to health care, employment or other specifics that should not be shared in the public space. It is also a risk. The third ethical issue is the increased level of vigilance and scrutiny even if the person under vigilance is unknown to it.  It is also a risk as it can capture those data as well that are not required by the authorities, but now accessed by them. The other risks are unauthorized access that can misuse the data, exposure to the public and loss of goodwill  among the others.

Though it also has the benefits of highest level of security & safety, vigilance and tracking of the anti-social elements that ultimately benefits the common people. Hence, internet of things delivers many benefits that can easily outweigh the downsides. Further, downsides can be effectively controlled by not letting gadgets to get connected and share data via internet when people are in a private space. So, it is within our hands to maintain the privacy and do not let unauthorized access in personal space.

There are many objects such as smart phones, laptops and play stations, that are connected via the internet and can share the information. These objects should be carefully used and not allow to get them connected via internet when in privacy, because it can share the data. So, it is more about the use of the objects that should be defined either to be with the internet or without the internet. Besides, electronic and electrical objects that can work without internet, should not be allowed to get connected via internet, because it can take data of different types and share.
