What are the densities of 5% (m/m) glycerin and 60% (m/m) glycerin?

What are the densities of 5% (m/m) glycerin and 60% (m/m) glycerin?

Solutions

Expert Solution

DENSITY= MASS/VOLUME

MASS= NO.OF MOLES X MOLECULAR MASS

1, Assume some fixed volume of the solution.

For convenience, let's assume a volume of 1 L

DENSITY OF GLYCERIN = 1.26 g/cm3

so concentrated grycerin in 1 L = 1260 g

5% of glycerin = 1260 x 5/100

=63g

=mass/density = 63/1.26

= 50ml

remaining volume of solvent= 950ml

let us assume water as solvent

mass of water = density x volume

= 1 x 950=950g

density of 5% glycerin= 63+950/1000

= 1.013g/ml

similarly,

60% of glycerin = 756g

=756/1.26

=600ml

remaining volume of solvent = 1000-600

= 400ml

mass of water = density x volume

= 1 x 400=400g

density of 5% glycerin= 756+400/1000

= 1.156g/ml
