What are the most suitable contaminants for the methods of both In Situ (chemical oxidation/reduction) and non situ (electrokinetics)?
What soil properties are needed or conductive to the methods for both chemical oxidation.reduction and electrokinetics?
What are the biggest limitations to using the methods of chemical oxidation/reduction and electrokinetics?
Answer-
The most suitable contaminants for the methods of both In Situ (chemicaloxidation/reduction) and non situ (electrokinetics) are as following:
1) In Situ (chemical oxidation/reduction)-
a) Chemical Oxidation- Chemical oxidation typically involves reduction/ oxidation (redox) reactions that chemically convert hazardous contaminants to nonhazardous or less toxic compounds that are more stable, less mobile, or inert. The most common contaminants are perchloroethane(PCE), trichloroethane(TCE), polycyclica aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH's), phenols, explosives, polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, dicholromethane, CCl4, CHCl3, Benzene etc.
b) Chemical Reduction-
2) Non situ(electrokinetics)- This technique is used for application of a low-intensity, direct current through the soil to separate and extract heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic contaminants from unsaturated soil, sludge, and sediments.
