distingush between case fatality rate and proportionate mortality rate as used in epidemiology by use of relevant examples.

Solutions

Expert Solution

case fatality rate — sometimes called case fatality risk — is the proportion of deaths from a certain disease compared to the total number of people diagnosed with the disease for a certain period of time.case fatality rate (CFR) is a measure of the severity of a disease.

Example

Assume 9 deaths among 100 people in a community all diagnosed with the same disease. The CFR, therefore, would be 9%.

Proportionate mortality is the proportion of deaths in a specified population over a period of time attributable to different causes.

It Can be calculated as the number of deaths from a given cause in a specific time period divided by the total number of deaths in the same time period.

Example

Let us assume total number of death is 30 and out of 30 deaths five death are due to a specific disease then proportionate mortality rate is given by 5/30=1/6=0.167 or 16.7%

Case study: SARS-CoV-2 a) Define the terms R0 and case fatality rate, b) Discuss the factors that influence the case fatality rate. c) Discuss how SARS-CoV-2 enters human cells, the antigenic target of vaccine approaches and the immune response they aim to induce, and how this would protect against infection.

Compare the mortality rate between two different countries of interest or between the Worldwide rate and any one country of interest.  You will perform a Two Sample Hypothesis Test of Proportions to compare the data.  Be sure to conduct a complete five step Hypothesis Test.  You may want to review the example problems posted in this week’s discussion stream.  State the conclusions based on the results of the test. Are there any reasons for the similarity or difference in mortality rates in the test?  In...

Visceral leishmaniasis has a very high case fatality rate but is difficult to diagnose: bone marrow biopsy, one of the best diagnostic methods, is expensive and is often associated with serious side effects. If you were developing a new diagnostic for this disease, would you be more interested in maximizing sensitivity or specificity? Also, assuming your new test is cheaper and less invasive than biopsy, would you advocate that it be used in conjunction with (ie simultaneously) or prior to...

Is there an association between the use of a computerized system and hospital mortality? In a large-scale hospital study, the study investigator randomly sampled 35 hospitals from all hospitals in Texas. Within each of the sampled hospitals, 500 patients who were hospitalized during the past year were randomly chosen. Their medical records were retrieved and whether they died while hospitalized was noted. It was found that on average, hospitals (26 of them) in which health care information is gathered and...

Infant mortality rate is defined as the number of babies that die between birth and age 1 per 1000 live births. For example, an infant mortality rate of 23.4 means that for every 1000 babies born 23.4 will die before age 1. We are using rates in this project because it allows us to compare regions with different population sizes. 1.Provide descriptive statistics (Mean, median, variance, standard deviation, and the five number summary) for infant mortalityrate for each region. 2....
