Machiavelli’s Prince is still a controversial work because of one primary reason. His work advocates autocratic regimes which focused mostly on the selfish ruling. Three factors make Prince more controversial. Firstly, the book suggests that it’s ok for a ruler to be stingy than generous. Secondly, it suggests that it’s ok to be cruel than merciful and finally it suggests it’s ok to break the promises if fulfilling those promises would affect the ruler’s interests.

The book’s primary motive is the end and not the means that is important. So, Machiavelli suggests that the ruler needs to be very selfish in order to achieve his goals. He suggests that the king can take up cruel measures in order to protect his kingdom and interests. He also suggests that the king need not stick to his words thus cheating his people in order to protect his own interests.

The Prince by all means presents the characteristics for a dictator and not for a democratic rule. If a ruler follows the words of Machiavelli, the ruler will bring more harm to the people than good.
