1.what is a correlation coefficient?
2.How is it reported?
3. What does it mean with respect to correlation between two or
more variables?
(1)
Correlation Coefficient (r) is a numerical figure quantifying the strength as well as the direction of the relation between 2 or more variables.
(2) Correlation Coefficient (r) is reported as a numerical figure between - 1 and + 1 (both inclusive) .i.e., - 1 r 1
(3)
With respect to correlation between two or more variables, it meansthe following:
If correlation Coefficient = 0, it implies that the variables under consideration are independent.i.e., an increase or decrease in one variable has no effect on an increase or decrease in other variables.
If correlation Coefficient is positive, it implies that there is direct relation between the variables under consideration. .i.e., if one variable increases, other variable also increases. if one variable decreases, other variable also decreases.
If correlation Coefficient is negative, it implies that there is inverse relation between the variables under consideration. .i.e., if one variable increases, other variable decreases. if one variable decreases, other variable increases.
