Ba2+ and Pb2+ have similar ionic radii. Explain any differences you expect in the properties and structure of BaCl2 and PbCl2.
Ba2+ (54 electrons) has electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6 4d10 5s2 5p6
Pb2+(80 electrons) has electron configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6 4d10 4f14 5s2 5p6 5d10 6s2
It can be seen that although Ba2+ and Pb2+ have similar ionic radii, but in Pb2+ the electronic clouds is contracted due to high number of protons in the nucleus. This high proton density offers much higher positive charge electrostatic attaction to the negatively charged electrons in Pb2+.
Thus, the Pb valence electrons are less tightly held by the nucleus due to more shielding effect by internal electrons (shielded from the nucleus) than that of Ba, making Ba2+ less electropositive or ionic .So,PbCl2 is more ionic than BaCl2,which is ionic but less polar in nature
