TechX have received complaints of excessive packaging of one of their products.  To test whether new minimalist packaging is preferred and whether the proportion of people who prefer the new packaging is different for different age groups, they have conducted a market test of the new packaging.  The results are given in the table below:

Age Group less than 20 20 to 40 over 40 total
Prefer New Packaging 108 108 84
Prefer Old Packaging 54 75 71
Total

(a) At a 5 % significance level is the proportion of people who prefer the new packaging the same for all age groups?  Set up and test the appropriate hypotheses.

(b) Suppose that a person is chosen at random from the people in the table above.  If you know that the person chosen is < 20, what is the probability that he/she prefers the new packaging?

Expert Solution

Using SPSS:

Make variables in Variable View.

Now Click on Values then give the lables in Age Group Variable:

Write 1 in Value and level name of Age Group in Lables.

Now Click on Values then give the lables in Packaging Variable:

Now Enter data in Data View:

Now Weight the Frequency of data:

Steps: Data-->Weight Cases

Select the Freq variable in Frequency Variable then click to ok.

Now Use Chi-square test:

Steps: Analyze-->Basic Statistics-->Crosstabs

Select Packaging in Rows and Age Group in Columns then click on Statistics:

Then tick the Chi-square and Click to Ok and Continue.

Output:

That is the Cross table.

Here, Chi-Square = 5.251, degree of freedom = 2 and P-value = 0.072.

Where p-value is 0.072, that is greater than 0.05, it is mean there is no association between Age Group and Packaging.

A soft drink company has recently received customer complaints about its one-liter-sized soft drink products. Customers have been claiming that the one-liter-sized products contain less than one liter of soft drink. The company has decided to investigate the problem. According to the company records, when there is no malfunctioning in the beverage dispensing unit, the bottles contain 1.02 liters of beverage on average, with a standard deviation of 0.15 liters. A sample of 70 bottles has been taken to be...

In a recent year, the Better Business Bureau settled 73% of complaints they received. You have been hired by the Bureau to investigate complaints this year involving computer stores. You plan to select a random sample of complaints to estimate the proportion of complaints the Bureau is able to settle. Assume the population proportion of complaints settled for the computer stores is 0.73, as mentioned above. Suppose your sample size is 190. Please answer the following questions, and show your...

A fresh produce distributor has received complaints that his bananas have been arriving at the retail sale store. He is suspicious of the complaint, since his average delivery time is only 4 days (96 hours), and the bananas are fresh at the time of shipment. He decides to simulate the appropriate conditions and make a test to see how long it takes before the bananas become spoiled. He selects at random a sample of four crates of bananas and measures...

Modern Products Company purchased new packaging equipment for $262,000 on January 1, 2016. The equipment is expected to be used for 5 years, or 66,000 operating hours. It has an estimated salvage value of $1,000. The equipment was used for 13,200 hours in 2016, 19,800 hours in 2017, and 16,500 hours in 2018. One of the most common complaints novice public speakers have is that they simply don’t know how to start a speech. Many times speakers get ideas for how to begin their speeches as they go through the process of researching and organizing ideas. In this chapter, we will explore why introductions are important and various ways speakers can create memorable introductions. There may not be any one “best” way to start a speech, but we can provide some helpful guidelines...

Suppose Amazon is considering replacing an old packaging system with a new one. The old system has a book value of $50,000 and a remaining life of 10 years and could be sold for $75,000 right now. The new machine costs $150,000 and has a depreciable life of 10 years, annual operating costs $40,000 lower than the old machine. Assuming straight line depreciation, 40% tax rate, and no salvage value on either machine at the end of 10 years, should...
