Which class of lipids do these belong to?
1. estradiol
2. Linoleic acid
3. Glyceryl tristearate
4. Dipalmitoylphosphatidycholine
5. corticosterone
6. glucocerebroside
Example | Class of lipids |
Estradiol | steroid |
Linoleic acid | fats and oil |
Glyceryl tristearate | waxes |
Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine | phospholipids |
Corticosterone | steroid |
Glucocerbroside | glycolipids |
Lipids are biomacromolecules. They are polymers of glycerides. Glycerides are made up of glycerol and fatty acids. The synthesis of glyceride is called as esterification reaction which is a dehydration or condensation reaction. One molecule of glycerol can form ester bond with one molecule of fatty acid to form monoglyceride or two molecules of fatty acids to form diglycerides or three molecules of fatty acids to form triglyceride. These are branched or unbranched linear molecules of lipids. Ringed molecules of lipids are derivatives of sterols.
