Describe the facts that led to the Love Canal environmental disaster. How was that disaster resolved?
ANSWER: In the world's history the Love Canal is one of the major tragic environmental manmade disasters. It was originally planned to be a model planned community along the eastern side of Niagara Falls, New York. The Power and Development Company of Niagara during 1942 permitted Hooker to dump wastes into the canal. The canal was turned into a dumpsite of industries instead by local government and afterwards the Hooker Chemical Company. Eventually the toxic waste began to surface and concerns on health safety resulted in the planned city being almost completely abandoned. Nearly 33% of the residents faced the chromosome damage, while birth defects increased, cancers increased, miscarriage rates increased, and the government bought out homeowners to ensure that they remain away from the contamination. Nearly 800 families were relocated to other areas. There have been over 248 separate chemicals have been unearthed of the Love Canal. The disaster resulted to the formation of the Superfund program in 1980, which assisted to cleanup of toxic sites.
