Look up "Lawn Chair Larry" on the internet: (a) In just a few sentences describe the incident that got him notoriety. (b) Do a calculation to make a rough estimate of the total volume of helium gas needed to cause such an incident. (c) If all that helium were used to fill one single spherical balloon what would be the approximate diameter of that balloon? (d) Some versions of the story claim that the lift was caused by 100 ordinary helium party balloons. Is that believable, and why, or why not? (Note that for this assignment you obviously do not need to stick to the essay template. When doing calculations, show your work so that the grader can follow your reasoning. In numerical calculations always make it a habit to verify the units!)
A) He strapped many weather balloons filled with helium with a lawn chair and floated up sitting in that chair. He didn't had an aviation license to to that, he broke the law and got himself arrested after a safe landing.
B) Considering an average human with a lawn chair having a total
mass of 80kg, the gravitational downward force on him would
be,
80*9.81N
Now if the volume of helium is V which causes a buoyant force F then,
, where is the density of gasses.
C)
If the diameter of the balloon is D then,
D)
An ordinary pary balloon is about 1 cubic foot when inflated, so 100balloons make 100cubic foot of helum = 2.832 cubic meter. Which is far less than the required volume. So It's not believable.
