The mucus in the cervix thickens due to progesterone.progesterone is a endogenous steroid and progestogen sex hormone involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and embryogenesis of human and other species.it belongs to a group of steroid hormones called the progestogens, and is the major progestogen of the body.
The cervical fluid is a kind of gatekeeper for the uterus.at ovulation the cervical fluid become slippery and thin, like egg white.it coats the v****a and protects the sperm from vaginas relatively acidic environment.the cervical fluid also nourishes the sperm and changes their structure to prepare them to fertilaize an egg.
After ovulation the progesteron level increases ,cervical fluid thickens in to a kind of plug that makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.the v****a becomes drieder too.
This is the mechanism behind progesteton pills, which is used for contraception ,by preventing the sperm to enter the utetus and it also makes the uterus wall thinner.
