Mg(s)+AgNO3(aq)→Mg(NO3)2(aq)+Ag(s)

Express your answer as a chemical equation. Identify all of the phases in your answer.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Magnessium reacts with aqueous solution of silver nitrate to produce magnessium nitrate and silver. Magnessium nitrate is a soluble compound while silver is an insoluble solid formed as precipitate. The reaction can be represented by the following equation:

Mg(s) + AgNO3(aq)   Mg(NO3)2(aq) + Ag(s)

Balancing of the equation:

Mg atom is already balanced. To balance NO3 we can place a coefficient 2 at AgNO3 as shown below:

Mg(s) + 2AgNO3(aq)   Mg(NO3)2(aq) + Ag(s)

This makes the Ag atoms unbalanced in the equation. So, the Ag atoms can be balanced by placing a coefficient 2 at Ag. This will give us the final balanced chemical equation as follows:

Mg(s) + 2AgNO3(aq)   Mg(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s)
