(a) sewage and phosphate rock

(b) sewage and agricultural fertilizers

(c) phosphate rock only

(d) agricultural fertilizers only.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • It's answer is option(b)
  • Cause :-it's main cause are as following describe below.
  1. Fertiliser - The phosphorus is present in the fertilisers in large quantity to increase the productivity of the soil present in the form of orthophosphate. Which is required by the plants for their growth as well enters in there food chain through plants where it is taken by the other animals for there growth and metabolism.
  2. Sewage - The waste such as faecal matter, waste food, detergents and certain soap also contain phosphorus the untreated Sewage water entera in the water and cause water pollution.
  • Effects :-
  1. Eutrophication - The water from water treatment plants enters into the rivers, canals and into other water bodies also untreated waste water which contain phosphorus were taken by phytoplankton which grow in large quantity and also algal blooms are formed.which results in the death of many aquatic organism which depends on oxygen for the respiration.
  2. Water which contain high quantity of phosphorus affect health of human beings also such as many problems of stomach, premature aging and cancer.
  • Treatment:-
  1. Some of the phosphorus entering the treatment plant is removed by primary (settling) and secondary treatment in this phosphorus remains in the solid form.
  2. Additional phosphorus is removed by adding ferric chloride, ferrous sulphate and alum.

In a rural area in Ontario, excessive use of fertilizers has caused an increase in the Nitrate concentration (mg/L) of 2 public wells that are used as drinking water sources. The concentrations, however, are not beyond the regulatory limit yet. To ensure the safety of dirking water, the utility plans to close the well with the higher nitrate level and take it out of service until they can find a solution. Nine samples are collected from each well and the...

Phosphate pollution of lakes and rivers is a considerable problem. Elevated phosphate levels can cause algal blooms and rapid eutrophication of freshwater ecosystems. To protect these ecosystems several strict pollution laws were enacted. The phosphate levels in a river were measured at several randomly chosen sites downstream from a chemical plant before and after these laws were passed. The following measurements were recorded in µg/liter units. Was there a significant decrease in phosphate levels after the laws were enacted? Assume...
