which is most inferior?
a) larynx
b) trachea
c) pharynx

Solutions

Expert Solution

Larynx, trachea and pharynx are the major structure of the respiratory passages. Inferior means below/away from the head. Trachea is most inferior structure in respiratory passages than larynx and pharynx.

Option c is incorrect Because, Pharynx is the first part after the nasal cavity which is divided into nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx.Air from the nasal cavity enters first into nasopharynx and passes down to oropharynx and laryngopharynx. But air from the mouth directly enters to laryngopharynx. pharynx isn't the most inferior structure because it is situated in most top area than trachea and larynx. Pharynx is the most superior structure than larynx and trachea.

Option a is incorrect because, The laryngopharunx connects larynx with the pharynx. This larynx act as voice box in human body, that helps to produce sound for communication. its actual position in the neck region at Cervical3-cervical6 region. The larynx also protects the food materials to enter the trachea rather than oesophagus. The inferior structure to larynx is trachea. So, larynx isn't the most inferior structure than trachea. larynx is superior to trachea.

Option b is correct because, Trachea is a long structure below the larynx, that extends downward behind to sternum. Then trachea form two division for each lung. The two first generation divison is called left and right principal bronchus. These two principal bronchus divide again till upto 23 generation division and form respiratory bronchiole and alveoli. Trachea is the zero generation of division, from where the tracheobronchial tree is formed. This multiple generation division from the trachea enhances the surface area of the entire airway passages. So, Trachea is the most inferior structure among pharynx and larynx. Trachea is situated in the most away/below position from the pharynx, larynx and head. So trachea is most inferior. Option b is correct.
