a. Is the average GPA of all currently enrolled students at the University of Florida an example of a parameter or a statistic?
The average GPA of all currently enrolled students at the University of Florida is an example of a statistic because it is based on the sample observations. We know that the statistic is based on sample observations and parameter is based on the population observations.
b. Is the number of magazines read last year by a collection of people an example of a discrete or continuous variable?
The number of magazines read last year by a collection of people is an example of a discrete variable, because it takes the discrete integer values.
c. Are cat breeds an example of a quantitative or a qualitative variable?
Cat breeds is an example of a qualitative variable, because it describes category of the cat breed.
d. What is the difference between a simple random sample and a stratified random sample?
In simple random sampling we select the random simple directly from the population by using proper method of randomization such as computer generated random numbers, random number tables, lottery method, etc. In the stratified random sampling method we first make strata and then we draw some random observations from each stratum to collect entire random sample. In stratified random sampling we divide the population in strata while we do not divide population in simple random sampling.
