Explain how the graph of the sine function can be used to graph y = csc x.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Check the graph of sine and cosecant functions,

Graph of the sine function:

And the graph of the cosecant function

As the cosecant function is reciprocal of the sine function, wherever sine become zero cosecant will be undefined and wherever sine reaches maximum value cosecant become minimum. As sine becomes 1 then cosecant become minimum similarly for negative value.

So sine function can be used to draw the graph as sine become maximum cosecant become minimum as well as the sine becomes zero cosecant becomes undefined.

Point of sine function can be used to draw its reciprocal function cosecant.

The x intercepts of the graph of y = sinx are the vertical asymptotes for the graph of y = cscx.

The x intercepts of the graph of y = sinx are the vertical asymptotes for the graph of y = cscx.

If you graph the function y = 3x  and y = 3 –x  the graphs create a reflection about the y-axis.  Explain why this occurs. Now, if you graph the function y = 3x  and y = -(3x)  the graphs create a reflection about the x-axis instead.  Explain why, in detail,  the reflection changes from being about the y-axis to being about the x-axis.
