A department store wishes to examine the reasons why customers switch to competing department stores. It extracts the list of all credit card transactions that happened during last month and selected every tenth name. These customers were subsequently contacted for a detailed survey. Comment on the sampling designs and suggest changes/improvements, if needed.
An administrator of an independent hospital wants to find out if single parents working in the hospital have a higher rate of absenteeism than parents who are not single. Identify:
Relevant population
Sampling frame
Sampling technique
Sample size
Sources of data
Answer:1
Samples are the representative of the population. Sample design refers to the process of selecting sample from the population. There are two type of sampling design one non-probability and other one is probability design.
In Non-probability design element do not have a known chance of
being selected, please note known chance does not mean equal
chance.
In probability design every element of the population has known
chance of being selected as the sample.
As this is the case of probability design, where every element of the population has known chance of being selected, as give sample design seems OK but it can be improved as per below mention comment.
As all the credit card user are the population and can be selected as per systematic sampling design, for this arrange a data in order (ascending or descending) from smaller expenditure to larger expenditure or vise-versa. Once order is done follow the step to proceed further.
Answer:2
Relevant population: Is the staff of the hospital, which are the combination of single parent and parents.
Sampling frame: All the element of the population with proper identification that is available for the selection.
Sampling technique: Stratified random sampling, in this divide the population in two strata one strata is for single parents and other one is for double parents. In single strata element should be homogenous in nature and heterogeneous in different.
Sample size: As a researcher we can take any arbitrary number for sample size but we can use statistically formation to choose the size of the sample.
Sources of data: Hospital Attendance register.
