The 9 species are to be separated based on their differences in volatility, primarily using distillation columns.(benzene,p-xylene, toluene, ethylene, cumene, hydrogen, methane , ethane, propane , propyl) rank the species from most volatile (#1) to least volatile (#9), and what is the physical properties used to make this determination.
Volatile means changing phase from liquid to gaseous state. We should consider boiling points of all these 8 species. As propyl is not a compound it is a group it will not exist alone. Examples are propyl alcohol, propyl chloride, propyl bromide, propyl iodide, propyl cyanide etc. Boiling point physical properties are used to make this determination.
Substance Boiling Point
1. hydrogen -252 oC ----------------------------- most volatile
2. methane -161.5 oC
3. ethylene -103.7oC
4. ethane -89 oC
5. propylene -47.6 °C
6. propane -42 oC
7. benzene +80.1 oC
8. toluene +110.6 oC
9. p-xylene +138.4 oC
10. cumene +152.4 oC ----------------------------- least volatile
